Jewellery Care

All of pieces made of  925 sterling silver, 999 fine silver, gold gilding needs a little tender loving care from time to time and what better way to know how to care for your jewellery, than with these top tips and tricks:

Polish:

Get your polishing cloth at the ready, because you’re about to take your pieces from looking worn, to brand new. Providing you polish your M.Kala jewellery frequently you’ll be able to maintain the newness, as well as preventing any tarnish build up.

Store:

When all is said and done, make sure you put your jewellery away at the end of each day…

Not just anywhere! Make sure you leave your M.Kala pieces in a tarnish-resistant pouch or in an airtight jewellery box. Please be reminded that our gift boxes are not suitable for jewellery storage.

Remove:

We love a good workout, but make sure that if you are engaging in any physical activity, especially swimming, please remove all your M.Kala pieces.

Tarnishing:

As tarnishing stands, it’s a natural and common chemical reaction which occurs over time. A little bit of lemon juice, baking soda bath, vinegar and salt are all easy and environmentally friendly way to revive your silver and gold. Just make sure to rinse well with warm water and pat dry straight after.

Limited Contact:

We highly recommend that when doing house hold chores or sprucing yourself up with some moisturiser and perfume, you remove all your jewellery. We know, they look beautiful on so why would you take them off?! But, keep the beauty and take them off when using any lotions, sanitisers, perfumes or cleaning products etc…

Hallmarking

Under the 1973 Hallmarking act it is a legal requirement for silver weighing over 7.78gms to have a UK recognised hallmark from one of the UK’s Assay Offices. There are 4 Assay Offices in the UK – London, Edinburgh, Birmingham and Sheffield.

What is it?

A hallmark is an official mark or series of marks struck on items made of metal, mostly to certify the content of precious metals—such as silver. Hallmarks are a legal requirement on products of a certain weight – depending on the metal being marked.

What does it look like?

Each hallmark tells its own story through a series of individual marks within the hallmark. A complete M.Kala hallmark consists of three symbols:

Sponsor’s Mark: This is a minimum of 2 initials that is our unique M.Kala design.

Standard Mark: This symbol is a number that tells you the type and standard of the metal the article is made from e.g. 925 for sterling silver.

Assay Office Mark: This states which Assay Office tested the article and hallmarked it. Each town has its own symbol for representation. For London it is the Lion Head.

Exemption: Items of minimum fineness, weighing less than 7.78gms (this includes most of earrings and brooches) will not carry a hallmark.

Our guarantee to you

M.Kala fully complies with the 1973 Hallmarking act and all of the precious metal jewellery that are sold carries the legally required independent hallmark which verifies that the metal content (unless the item is exempt by weight). Please be assured that you are buying a piece that has been sourced from high quality credited bullion which is checked for authenticity.
